THE GREAT AND DREADFUL DAY OF THE LORD

The Great and dreadful day of the Lord:

“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:” (Old Testament Malachi 4:5)

The Lord desires that we all prepare to meet him. Many Christians in the world today are at the expectative of the wonders and the signs of his coming in glory. For after wars and rumors of wars then comes the sign of the Son of Man. But before that day the scriptures say, that the moon shall turn into blood and that the sun will refuse to give off its light. That the stars will be dissolved and the heaves shall roll like a scroll; and also that the earth shall reel to and fro as a drunkard. Many of us worried about the conglomeration of great and dreadful events that will precede the advent of Jesus Christ to know of a surety of his coming.

Concerning the great and dreadful day of the Lord, however, some people think that the decimating events that will cause the end of the world as we know it will be due to regional and global wars in its entirety by one or more individuals that are against or before Christ. Others think that the internal natural forces of the earth will convulse the surface of the earth creating world wide cataclysm. And others yet, think that the catastrophes at the end of the world will be cosmic in nature bringing about the crashing of worlds and therefore havoc on our frail planet.

I particularly think that the events that will precipitate the end of the world could very well be a combination of all these three factors in varying degrees. And since there is a pattern in all things, it entertains the possibility of a fourth factor also; or a set of great and dreadful events that we totally ignore could occur. It could be the factor of surprise. It could be anything we have not though of. It could be a marvelous work and a wonder, a strange act of god, something glorious that will manifest the potency and the divinity of God. It could be an encounter of the third kind.

If we think about all these things we can know the truth of what may or may not occur. For instance, you and I know these facts. In the world we have had wars and rumors of wars perhaps since the beginning of time or since the beginning of history. The prospect of wars is also increasing nowadays due to the factor of secret combinations and terror or other works of darkness. Therefore, the chances that there would be a war or combination of war perils right before or at the coming of the Lord are very high. There is no question or even a mystery about that.

Today also, we know about the intricacies of the earth more than ever before. We are learning that we have an increase in cataclysmic episodes from changes in the atmosphere due to global warming and other natural, or man made factors. These vicissitudes affect both sea and land. Furthermore, the tectonic movements of the internal mechanics of the earth are felt with more frequency that, it is very possible also that before or during the coming of the Lord we will also experience these things in regular or enhanced convulsion.

Still, there are things that we do not know about the internal structure of the world but with the technology at hand, whatever may take place could be, if not predicted, anticipated. Therefore, there is not much of a mystery in those things to fear either.

Nowadays also, for nearly two thousand years we have endured cosmic peace in our planet. We have not had any significant cosmic or extraterrestrial disturbances in the world or in the solar system of massive proportions. In simple view and dedicated observation it is unlikely that something of that sort will happen anytime soon. Yet, it has been often demonstrated that when really bad things start to happen, they pour.

Adversity attacks from all angles. Perhaps we are also due for some major changes of this cosmic character that we ignore and that may affect the order of the solar system. And therefore, these vicissitudes may cause cosmic havoc in the world changing even our notion and our perception of reality. Therefore, it is also possible, although unlikely, that things of this nature may also take effect during the coming of the Lord in Glory.

I am leaning towards cosmic disturbances more than the other previously noted factors; which is in simple view, cosmic catastrophes are the least evident to occur at the end of the world or before the coming of Christ. Yet, the vehement mechanisms of the cosmos and the time structures thereof are truly unknown. There is at mystery imbedded in cosmic things that may incite us to a degree of fear a bit more than the other explained dreadful factors. But can we really fear a mystery or it is just the unknown? And last but not least, we also have the element of surprise. God can choose whatever he desires to manifest as a prelude of his coming. It is his heaven and earth after all. These things could be both great and terrible.

Nonetheless, whatever the causes of these vicissitudes that may incite a greater or lesser degree of fear in us, it is curious to note that most of us only concentrate, for the most part, in the dreadful things, rather than the great things of the day of the coming of the Lord. Fearful or not as these things do appear to be, perhaps, there is little that a great many of us can do to avert these, man made, natural or cosmic catastrophic calamities unless we fully repent and come unto Christ.

Many also thing that we are here to stay for a very long time and many also thing that the Lord delays his coming and other just believe that the prophets that spoke about the calamities that will engulf the world were only delusions and that those set of beliefs o traditions are of no effect in our day and age.

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” (New Testament 2 Peter 3:9 - 10)
